Jada and Will Smith Are Boycotting the Oscars

“Begging for acknowledgement, or even asking, diminishes dignity.” – Jada Pinkett-Smith

In this Facebook video, Jada Pinkett-Smith, openly acknowledges that she and her husband will not be watching or attending the Oscars. She also states the case for supporting Black films, artists, and businesses while urging people of color to claim their financial and influential power to help build up their communities. And that  we can do this without seeking the validation of mainstream organizations.
Will Smith wasn’t nominated for an Oscar this year for his role in Concussion. And while this may play a role in their stance this year, there is no denying that Jada’s statements in this video ring true. With over one trillion dollars in buying power, is it really necessary to state the obvious- that we are a force to be reckoned with? How long will people of color wait around to be validated by a system that consistently devalues us?

#OscarsSoWhite: The Zendaya Situation

I had no idea that young actress Zendaya Coleman was being ridiculed about her locs. I thought she looked beautiful on the Oscars red carpet. Sadly, America is still catching up with the idea of beautiful, and with all of the tremendous gains of Black actresses on the screen recently, one would think her hair would be a non-issue. Talkshow host Giuliana Rancic made an insensitive comment regarding her look:

“I feel like she smells like patchouli oil and weed.”

<< Facepalm. >>
Zendaya expressed her disappointment eloquently last night:

Oscars 2015: Neutral Zone

Zoe Saldana won the Oscars red carpet hands-down (sorry Jennifer!).
There is just something about this stunning blush-colored dress, elegant draping, and overall flattering silhouette that makes this dress just the right amount of sexy and glam. I loved the neutrals that everyone was wearing and it gave the evening a lighter, softer feel away from the heaviness of recent awards shows. The other winners were Oprah, director Ava Duvernay, and Lupita Nyong’o’s Vanity Fair afterparty gown.
