This Is Why I Love Janelle Monae

Because she’s not only a fashion ingenue. Because she’s not just a quirky Black pop star. Because she stands for something.

Won’t you say their names? Can we say their names right now? Can we speak their names, as long as we have breath in our bodies? -Janelle Monae

After helping to lead a #BlackLivesMatter march in Philadelphia on Wednesday in remembrance of the anniversary of Michael Brown’s death and all the other black lives lost senselessly to police brutality, the artist, along with her Wonderland label mates released Hell You Talmbout. The song is urgent, pleading, angry, and emotional. Have a listen here. And say their names.

2015 BET Awards: Turnt Up

Man listen. I usually don’t get hyped about awards shows, but then things like this happen –

And can we get into Kendrick Lamar’s performance of Alright? That powerful performance was a bold message that I could literally feel through the screen.

I also really dug how Jidenna kept the  activist tone alive with his use of the iconic 1960’s protest posters that Boldly proclaimed “I AM A MAN.” I see you, Jidenna.

Oh yes, the ladies of the red carpet did their thing too.

Pharrell is a Fashion Icon #CFDA

“Fashion had to be the hardest high school I ever entered.”
— Kanye West

This guy won the Fashion Icon award, presented by Kanye and Kim West.

And while Pharrell has definitely had some fashion moments, I think the Council just decided to laugh at themselves and chill out a bit, and that’s cool too. Because even the cool kids can’t always take themselves so seriously.
