Jada and Will Smith Are Boycotting the Oscars

“Begging for acknowledgement, or even asking, diminishes dignity.” – Jada Pinkett-Smith

In this Facebook video, Jada Pinkett-Smith, openly acknowledges that she and her husband will not be watching or attending the Oscars. She also states the case for supporting Black films, artists, and businesses while urging people of color to claim their financial and influential power to help build up their communities. And that  we can do this without seeking the validation of mainstream organizations.
Will Smith wasn’t nominated for an Oscar this year for his role in Concussion. And while this may play a role in their stance this year, there is no denying that Jada’s statements in this video ring true. With over one trillion dollars in buying power, is it really necessary to state the obvious- that we are a force to be reckoned with? How long will people of color wait around to be validated by a system that consistently devalues us?

Jada Pinkett Smith Does Red Well

If your man can’t really see another woman’s beauty how the hell is he going to see yours?
-Jada Pinkett Smith

This is the second post today about the Smiths, I know. But Jada is such an inspiration for me, personally, that I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to give a giant thumbs up for making power red look amazing. The shift dress looks very airy and comfortable, but I adore the floaty red blouse and graphic black and white shorts pairing. It’s classic, fun, and serious all at the same time. Love.

Here is another take on this look:
