Covered: Lupita + Kerry + Zoe + Christina Are The May Beauties

April showers bring May flowers… Lupita Nyong’o  covers UK Harper’s Bazaar, Kerry Washington is on The Edit, Zoe Kravitz gets dominant in Complex, and Christina Milian plays the forlorn lover in Latina Magazine. Indulge.

#NAACPImageAwards : Any You Slay, And You Slay!

This awards show seemed to sparkle just a bit more than others. Maybe it was because it has been, and continues to be a great time in movies and television for Black actors (Who else is addicted to #HTGAWM, #EmpireFox, #ScandalABC,   & #BMJ?). I enjoyed just about everyone’s look son the red carpet, but my favorite of all? Angela Bassett. I mean, can I have what she’s having?

The JLo School of Winter Wear

While your faves are escaping the brutal East Coast winter to exotic, warm locales, and luxuriating on yachts, Jennifer Lopez braves the cold in her best Don Diva to promoter her new movie Boy Next Door. I’ve got to give her props. She makes winter look so good.

#GoldenGlobes2015: The Belles of the Ball

A heartfelt congratulations to Jane The Virgin TV star Gina Rodriguez for her Golden Globe win for Best Actress in a comedic series. Listen to her speech giving props to the Latino community:

A proud shout out to Common and John Legend who won best song for “Glory” featured in the must see drama surrounding Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the other major players in the 1960’s civil rights movement. Below, his powerful speech.

#VMAS2014 Highs

Beyonce is a marketing genius.
Last night’s MTV Video Music Awards was like your aunt’s potato salad at the family reunion. You settle in for the dish, take a bite, and notice that there’s a little something missing. Even a dose of Beyonce couldn’t add that missing spice back.
Kuddos to Bey for her Vanguard Award. 20 years of steady hustle can’t be denied.

Thanks to Common for encouraging us to remember the loss of our son Michael Brown.
I have to give props to Miley Cyrus for being mature and bringing the issue of homelessness to the screen.
That Saint Laurent dress is smoking hot, when the zipper works. Poor Nicki.
THE MODELS looking their best, as usual.

And my favorite look of the night, featuring Iggy Azalea.

Weekday Swag: Angela Bassett for Violet Gray

Angela Bassett is on that young. Can I please get some of that youth serum?
The legendary actress/director did a quick Q&A for the LA-based Beauty store Violet Grey, and she looked as fabulous as ever in a tasteful black and white lingerie pictorial. Indulge.

Cannes Film Festival 2014: The Red Carpet

Best in Show: Freida Pinto
The south of France is one of my favorite places to visit. It’s wonderfully tranquil, laid back and sophisticated – the perfect getaway.  The trip is easily accessed via train from Italy, and the views of the Mediterranean are spectacular. But this isn’t a post about my travels. It’s about the star-filled Festival de Cannes, the annual celebration of the future films to be seen. Here are some of my favorite looks from the red carpet:
 America Ferrera
Liya Kibede
Lupita Nyong’o
Aishwarya Rai
 Salma Hayek
Sonam Kapoor
There’s more fabulous-ness over on Facebook.

Jessica Alba’s Perfectly Pretty Movie Awards Outfit

Can this outfit get any better? I just love the burst of yellow color in Jessica Alba’s skirt and the sweet simplicity of the white tube top. Paired with Jimmy Choo heels, this look is pure red carpet perfection.

Weekday Swag: Erykah, Ledisi + Solange Bring It for Essence Magazine

I can’t help but think that the new Essence Magazine reminds of my old favorites Honey and Suede. The colorful and bold style brings me back to my days in college working with the then-publishers on Honey’s redesign as a group project, and later on the soon-to-be-named Suede, which subsequently was a subsidiary of Essence before Essence Communications got sold to Time.
I remember getting the call one night, when I, as a fashion assistant at Suede, got the call that Suede would no longer be, and that the following day would be my, and the entire staff’s last. The folding of Suede is what inspired me to start Lavish, and 8 years later, with starts and stops, I still blog for my beloved baby.  Reminisce and enjoy these lovely covers featuring the all natural beauty of Erykah Badu, Ledisi and Solange.
