Shoutout to Babacar M’Baye: He’s one of my favorite Sabar teachers, and on Saturday will be hosting a show at Djoniba’s. Oh, yeah, for those of you who don’t know, this is Djoniba (Jo-NEE-ba)… (nice, right?) He owns the largest African and ethnic dance school in the U.S. This is the place where people go to start out learning African dance, and it’s where I took my very first Sabar class with Lamine Thiam (We miss you, Lamine!) and Ousmane Saal (We miss you too!) Sabar is pure fire and most people don’t take it because it’s a really complicated dance. But it’s beautiful to watch nonetheless.
