King looking crisp, and well put together
Even though I’d already done a post about the influence of politics on fashion, I felt it poignant to reflect on the style of the activists of another day. Culture icons like Angela Davis undoubtedly influenced fashion and style amongst the colored masses. Today, with the nation and the world focusing on the words and life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, I couldn’t help but think about the Reverend’s fashion appeal. Not only were his words cunning, provoking, and stirring, but his appearances served to deliver his messages with conviction. Part of a person’s political charisma is in the presentation, and Dr. King never dissapointed in sharp, well tailored suits. His look was perhaps what the Esquire man would aspire to today. Notably, it’s obvious that future presidential candidate, Illinois Senator Barack Obama not only shares a charismatic oratorical presence with King, but a stylish one as well.
