I have been meaning and meaning to post something about this artist because the first time I heard her, I was hooked. Esperanza Spalding is a bassist and vocalist whose voice often reminds me of a younger Amel Larrieux. Her album, Esperanza, is a wonderfully fresh mix of jazz, soul, and a hint of Latin flair. She’s soft, sweet, with the sass of a lounge singer at times. My favorite is the funky Ponta de Areia.
