A Cure for the Winter Doldrums

Today is just one of those days in New York City where you pull back the curtain, see all that wetness, and just want to curl back under the covers with a cafe au lait and a magazine. But alas, most of us have to get up and about, trudging through subway cars full of greys, blacks and browns. Ots only January and I already read for spring.

So seeing Solange (here at a Tiffany's event) dressed in a springy yellow please skirt and funky color block sandals, makes me want to throw on something just as colorful. Here's a simple and inexpensive take on her look.

I'll be honest. I'm not the biggest Missoni fan. Something about their zig-zaggy, nostalgic prints remind me of the most unfashionable memories of the 70's and 80's. But taking a look at the new Missoni for Target collection gave me hope

When I saw Kelly Rowland at her album release party last week, I wondered if Beyonce and Michelle coordinated with her to make a fashionable DC reunion. I have a very picky ear, and most of the time i need to listen to an album first to see if it won't be a complete waste of my hard earned money. I don't like all my music sounding the same, and I need good, quality musicianship and earnest lyrics for the rare times that I get to zone out on my iPod. So it goes without saying that I will be purchasing Jill Scott's new album, "The Light of the Sun".
Just for sport, I listen to a few snippets on iTunes, and I was immediately sold. And this album cover is on point. I love that Jill is stepping up her fierceness factor. Go on, girl.

I personally will be taking my dad to Dinosaur's BBQ in Harlem, because that barbecue is the best I've tasted outside of North Carolina. I plan to get him a couple of mixed drinks, a basket of fried green tomatoes, and a rack of ribs. Cheers to that!

Lavish MusicPicks: Marsha Ambrosius addresses HIV

First off, I must say that I love Marsha Ambrosius as an artist, and will remain a devoted fan as long as she continues to put out real music. Her new song, Late Nights & Early Mornings, is my new favorite song.

Secondly, Marsha looks HELLA FLY in this video. I mean, I love every look in this piece, which I will dissect in another post.

Most importantly, I really appreciate how the Marsha and the director took what could be a typical video for a love making song to address safe sex, and the situations that occur in everyday relationships. I felt really sad watching this video
(regardless of the great music and the hot fashion--because the message was so basic and so common, yet so sad. It's sad because in 2011, men and women in non-monogamous relationships are still engaging in casual, unprotected sex. I hope this video will help to open up the dialogue once again.

Lavish Recipe: Frozen Hot Chocolate

I usually have chocolate at least once a day, and that chocolate must be of the highest and darkest quality to truly satiate my tastes. But the heat will do my favorite treat in, even though I can never resist it. Thank goodness for frozen drinks. Here, the recipe for Serendipity's Frozen Hot Chocolate:

Frozen Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:
6 half-ounce pieces of a variety of your favorite chocolates
2 teaspoons storebought hot chocolate mix
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 cups milk
3 cups ice
Whipped cream
Chocolate shavings

Chop the chocolate into small pieces and place it in the top of a double boiler over simmering water, stirring occasionally until melted. Add the cocoa and sugar, stirring constantly until thoroughly blended. Remove from heat and slowly add 1/2 cup of the milk and stir until smooth. Cool to room temperature.
In a blender place the remaining cup of milk, the room temperature chocolate mixture, and the ice. Blend on high speed until smooth and the consistency of a frozen daiquiri. Pour into a giant goblet and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Enjoy with a spoon or a straw. . . .or both!

Fashion's head of class showed out at Alice Tully Hall for the 10th annual CFDA Fashion Fund Awards, awarding the design world's most creative and talented. The event, hosted by CNN's Anderson Cooper and underwritten by Swarovski, was held at Alice Tully Hall in New York City. Marc Jacobs took home the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, while a retrospective of his work was presented. Said CFDA President Diane von Furstenberg:

“These Awards not only honor the best talents in fashion. The evening is also a testament to the influence of the CFDA and its efforts to help the industry.”

The Colors of Carol: Cassie+ Solange+ Selita

I have a bone to pick with Carol's Daughter, and its a bone that has likely already been picked to the marrow. A few months ago DJ Solange Knowles, and models Cassie and Selita Ebanks were picked as the new spokes-models for the beauty company's diversity initiative. They are seen here at the latest promotion for the Monoi Repairing Collection launch at Sephora in New York City.

Countless women howled at the lack of diversity among the women, and I was among them;
it is clear that all of three women are more or less the same color. Could they not have found a darker skinned beauty? I tweeted about a new documentary called Dark Girls, that I think every conscious woman should see. Its clear that the color madness has affected even the marketing of a previously all-natural, all-embracing beauty company for woman of color. I used to cherish visiting the original Carol's daughter store on Dekalb Avenue in Brooklyn, with it's old school mason jars, and brown paper bags. Finally, there was a store with products made for me, with sisters who looked like me. It's a shame how much they've changed.

Oprah Winfrey: The O Factor

While everyone was hyperventilating over the bombastic finale shows for the regal send-off of Oprah Winfrey, I reflected on the effect that she has had on me, in my lifetime. I am extremely proud of this extraordinary Black woman who came from such humble and unfortunate beginnings; in many ways we share the same life story.
Consequently, I also have come to think of Oprah as the modern-day mammy--a shoulder on which disparate White women have come to cry. This is not an altogether awful thing as many Black historians would make you believe. In a way she became an Everywoman, an entity in which all women (and men) of all colors felt comfortable. This is a phenomenal trait and not one that I have seen anyone else accomplish so flawlessly. With this trait she was able to reach the unreachable, expand perceptions, and bring notable causes, people, and world issues from obscurity to a world stage. While questionable at times--most notably her experimentation with more New Age concepts towards the end of her show--I applaud her success as a Black woman, business leader and entrepreneur. My only regret in witnessing the end of her network TV era was that I did not have my own chance to sit on her golden couch.

I've been noticing a refreshing look on the red carpet lately, with stars toning down the makeup and opting for a cleaner, softer, more fresh-faced look. I'm definitely feeling this, as we move into summer. Nobody want to wear a ton of makeup in the heat. Kerry Washington and Rihanna do the fresh look effortlessly, and you can to by following these simple steps:

First: Cleanse, tone, and moisturize. This is the basis of any look.

Second: Skip the foundation and opt for a concealer to dab on any trouble spots.

Third: For the eyes, add a soft golden hue under the brow bone and smooth in so that the gold is subtle and not shocking. Rim the eyes with a deep brown (not black) shade of eyeliner. then take a silver or white highlighter and dab the inside corner of your eyes. Blending is crucial here so that the colors aren't abrupt. Use a clear brow gel to shape your eyebrows. If you must, add a touch of mascara to the outer corner of your lashes. Too-Faced 's Natural Eye palette is perfect for this.

Fourth: Take a creamy lipstick and line the edge of the lips. Don't fill in the lips. Spread the color with a little gloss.

Fifth: Smile and place two or three dabs of lipstick on your cheeks and blend in so that the color is barely visible.

I have to admit that while watching the awards, I shamelessly flipped between the Real Housewives of OC to see the unveiling of Alexis Couture (howl!) and Celebrity Apprentice. Honestly, I really didn't care to listen to any live performances; I was really interested in what everyone was (or in this case) wasn't wearing. The theme of the evening? The red carpet produced some solid sartorial gems, and the stage performance threw the pants out of the window.

For best dressed, it was a tossup between Michelle Williams (left) perfectly accessorized look and Rihanna's flawless white pantsuit.

If you have ever spent a late night clubbing in the Meatpacking District, there was only one place to go at 4am to help cure the effects of an indulgent drink-a-thon: Florent. Florent was the one restaurant you could go to without having to wait on a line,
or worse, fear being rejected at the door. It was an all-inclusive spot, hence the laid-back vibe. I remember spending many an early morning chowing down on Blueberry pancakes and sausage, while laughing at a drag queen dancing at back room booth. Sadly, the low-key eatery, owned by Florent Morellet, shuttered in 2008.

Florent: Queen of the Meat Market, is a David Sigal directed documentary highlighting the diner's most famed guests through interviews, photos, sound bites, and videos. It is an homage to the nightlife of the past.

I love hearing about the next big thing in music. And when I say music, I mean true, bonafide, raw talent. I still count myself as an original Esperanza Spalding fan, I will give her props forever because that woman is badass musician.

What a delight it was to find this musical gem in my inbox: blues guitarist TJ Evans. Think of her as a Meshell Ndegeocello for 2011. Reads her bio:

You may not yet know her name, but TJ Evans is no stranger to music. Her musical heritage includes great uncle Peter Bocage, one of the great trumpeters of New Orleans history, and piano giant Eddie Bo. TJ’s grandmother was an opening act for Ray Charles, and
her mother spent years touring as a vocalist with George Clinton’s Brides of Funkenstein.

This sister credits Patti LaBelle and Metallica among her influences, and you can tell by the music. I just listened to Paradiso, and the essence of blues seeps through the track, with confident guitar licks that speak a soulful truth. TJ will be making a special appearance onstage with George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic at BB King’s in NYC on May 31 to announce the release of her new singles. I heard a lot of chatter about her straightening her hair and going against the natural grain, but, really, can't we give the sister a break? I often flat-iron my hair when I want to flip the script, and people should just understand that versatility is the beauty of Black hair.

Music News: Beyonce For Billboard Magazine

So. The Queen Bee is about to drop her new album, and while she has kept her die-hard fans salivating by dropping snippets of her new video for Girls (Who Rule The World),

many critics are a little skeptical of the single's merits with comments ranging from unlistenable to hypnotic. The jury is out. But what I can say for sure is that she's rocking this Marc Jacobs dress and belt from the Spring '11 collections, (one of my favorites), so she definitely gets points for that. Beyoncé spoke with Billboard about the new album, titled 4, the influence of Fela Kuti, and the departure of her father as her manager.

Style News: Non Virtual, Virtual Dressing Room

I hate trying on clothes. Whenever I go into a shop, I am enthralled by the dizzying array of styles and endless possibilities of looks. But I dread the fiting room. maybe its the thought of trying on something that looks awesome on the rack, only to see that it looks terrible on my own body, or that it just doesnt fit at all. Most of the time, I just avoid the disappointment, and purchase brands in sizes that I know are a sure fit. The piece of clothing has to be pretty damn special for me to actually go and try it on.

But what if there was technology that allowed you to try on an outfit,
in the store, without removing a single article of clothing? Cue AR Door's new project, that scans your body and then allows you to place an article of clothing on the lifesize screen exactly in the space your body inhabits on the screen. You can view yourself from the front and from the back in the outfit. I think that is pretty cool. Whether or not shoppers will take to this new technology without actually walking into a fitting room remains to be seen. But it sure can knock down a handful of your choices, and save you some time.

The virtual fitting room is built on the most sophisticated technologies: augmented reality and Microsoft Kinect. Augmented reality allows the customers to select a garment off the rack without having to try it on physically. As a customer, you see yourself onscreen with a 3D copy of a dress. Kinect allows the user to control the program by simple gestures pushing virtual buttons right in the air.

Artness: Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition Exhibit

This Mother's Day, my daughter and I took in some art after enjoying a lovely intimate breakfast. While strolling along Van Brundt Street, Brooklyn, we finally made it to the water, past the Fairway supermarket, and stumbled upon the opening of an art show benefiting these artists in the Gowanus. It was a pleasant surprise, and while there were many standout pieces, the best artwork came from a group of high school artists. Unfortunately, theirs was the only work that wasn't for sale. Here are some snapshots:

"Convergence is a great opportunity for people to see the new work that artists are doing, and to acquire it at a reasonable price," said John Strohbeen, BWAC's President. "It is high-quality work and a great way to start an art collection, to find a very special birthday, or last-minute Mothers Day present."

The Celebs came out for Maxim's Hot 100 party, and while the brand is dedicated to the overtly sexy, there were a few standouts and a few fashion misses on the red carpet.

Amber Rose showed up in a highly unflattering dress. What makes it unflattering? It may be too small, it highlights all the wrong places, and makes her look chunkier than she really is. A simple fix would be a body shaper, a slightly larger dress, and a hemline that graces the knees to take this look to a bombshell level.

Claudia Jordan, video vixen and former Celebrity Apprentice contestant wore spiked heels that were more remarkable than her dress.

Kali Hawk may have been dressed just a little too formally for this event.

Kelly Rowland was the perfect mix of casual and glam in a gray shift dress and gold platform pumps.

Keri Hilson showed off just the right amount of sex appeal in a cut out dress and yellow platform pumps. Her look was perfection.

Canadian singer Melanie Fiona does neon right by toning down the other elements of this outfit with a sheer black lace top and black platform pumps.

The jury is out on singer Melody Thornton's dress. While she has the body for the dress, the velvet and green shade may not be the best choice.

StarStruck: Don't Try This at Home

These picks are from last week, but I couldn't resist posting them. Here are two looks that are extremely hard to pull off, and unless you have the body and star power of say, Nicki, or Ciara, I wouldn't try them. Nicki was at a Samsung party last week in conflicting spandex stripes. I have seen this style on less flattering shapes in real life, and it does not work.

Ciara, seen here in California, has the body of a model, and while any other girl wearing this outfit may come of has tasteless, she somehow pulls off a pair of daisy dukes and cutoff jeans. Must be the money.

Ballerinas are truly having their moment. From Kanye's Runwaway video to the film Black Swan, the public is once again embracing the ethereal grace of the dancer.New York Magazine has a new article out on Misty Copeland, American Ballet Theater's first Black principle dancer and Prince's muse/girlfriend. This woman had it at the tender age of 15, and her bold moves have made her a force to be reckoned with in the color-lacking world of Ballet.

“When I stop dancing, I don’t know how I’m going to fill the void of just the experience of performing at the Met—how intense it is to be there for two months straight. Your body gets into a shape it doesn’t reach the entire year, that season.”

Update: An anonymous commenter noted that Misty Copeland was not, in fact, the first Black dancer at American Ballet Theatre, but that Anne Benna Sims and Nora Kimball preceded her in the 1980's. While I found this to be true, many articles still credit Misty as being the first Black principal dancer there.

The basics of good skin care is an oft neglected regiment of the Black woman's beauty routine. But as I have stated several times before, the foundation of a flawless face is cleansing, toning, and moisturizing.
Dr. Ranella Hirsch, a noted Boston dermatologist, says

"This can be the result of UV exposure or subsequent to inflammatory skin conditions such as acne. Dark spots affect many skin types and can be quite upsetting to those affected.”

You've heard it before, but the best way to combat dark spots is prevention.

Wear sunscreen everyday (yes, even in the winter). Also, be sure to reapply sunscreen often when exposed to the sun for extended periods of time. Sunscreen defends your skin against brown spots in two ways: it prevents new spots from forming and stops pre-existing spots from darkening.

Last week's unceremonious firing of Gap, Inc.'s design director Patrick Robinson sent shockwaves throughout the fashion industry. With so few people of color holding prominent design positions, we all wondered why, and what would be next in the struggle to retain diversity in the industry.While the official report from Gap re-imagined the parting as amicable, several unspecified reports pointed to lagging sales and uninspired design.

According to a recent Life, Inc article:

The recession also may have played a role, in part because many companies found themselves focused on issues other than diversity, said Ilene Lang, president and CEO of Catalyst, which seeks to advance women's roles in the workplace, and the chair of the Alliance for Board Diversity. She doesn't think companies are actively seeking to exclude women and minorities, yet they may not have made a major effort to include them.

Though it seems that the general trend is to hire people who bring in proven results--regardless of race--it, the thought of one less Black person in a position of power in this industry is saddening. I doubt we have seen the last of this talented brother; it's only a matter of time before he moves on to bigger and better things.

Form Over Function: Met Costume Institute Ball

In the past I've mused about the impractical (and painful) fashion selection that many celebrities employ for the cameras. But at what point does one separate the runway from reality? Even with the help of her assistance and husband, Bey struggled in a couture McQueen gown to walk up a series of steps at the Ball; this gown-though stunning- was clearly meant for a catwalk, where there are no hills, cobblestones, or stairs in sight.

Rarely do we ever see the likes of Beyoncé or Mariah in a pair of shoes less than 6 inches high, let alone flats. The latter had no choice because of impending labor with twins! And even pregnancy is not off-limits to style as witnessed on Bravo's new reality show Pregnant in Heels. Heels that highs and clothes so tight can have perilous repercussions for our bodies. Which begs the question: Are there no lengths that a woman would go for style?

Lavish Recipe: Chocolate and Banana Ice Cream

As summer approaches (anyone living in New York City knows that spring never comes), I look forward to creating some one-of-a-kind tasty treats for the warmer weather. And although I could eat ice cream any time of the year, that first ring-a-ling of the Mr. Softee truck always makes me especially happy.

I've become a foodie as of late, happily whipping up complex cakes and cookies, all for a taste of something new, so adding ice cream to my list of cooking activities will hopefully make me into a celebrated kitchen queen. The recipe below is from an older post from David Lebovitz's website, and I plan to indulge this weekend...

Chocolate and Banana Ice Cream

Four to six scoops

From Ready for Dessert (Ten Speed) by David Lebovitz

This is the world’s easiest ice cream. It takes literally a minute to put together—since it’s winter, I simply set the bowl of chocolate and milk on the radiator, and while I leisurely and lovingly take the time to peel the banana, the chocolate melts and is soon ready to use.

You can easily increase this recipe to make more than it calls for. I haven’t tried it with any other liquor, but for those of you who want to experiment, you do need to include a similar amount and percentage of alcohol to prevent the ice cream from freezing too hard. The banana gives the ice cream a smooth, creamy consistency and provides the sweetness, so use a nice, ripe one.

I found that this keeps for weeks in the freezer and maintains it’s absolutely perfect consistency. Cheers!

2 ounces (55 g) bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, chopped

6 tablespoons (80 ml) milk, whole or low-fat

6 tablespoons (80 ml) Baileys liquor

1 medium-sized ripe banana, peeled*, and cut into chunks

1 tablespoon (15 ml) dark rum

1. In a small bowl set over a pan of simmering water (or in the microwave), melt the chocolate with the milk.

2. Blend the melted chocolate the Baileys, the banana, and rum until smooth.

3. Pour into a plastic or metal container, cover, and freeze for at least 4 hours.

Celeb Line of the Day: June Ambrose Turbans

I've been rocking head wraps for a while now. Its funny to me because every few years, the turban seems to make a comeback on the fashion scene; I last remembered the explosion in 2007 with Prada's version:

When I took African dance class more frequently, I would wear them nearly every day, and my visits to Africa helped me perfect my wrapping technique for the Brooklyn streets.

Now, while I'm no expert on wrapping, I can hold it down with pretty much any type of fabric you hand me. It's a quick fix for a bad hair day, and can instantly take my look in another, more fabulous direction.

New Movie: Jumping The Broom

I honestly haven't been excited to see any big budget films as of late, but the trailer for this upcoming RomCom got me laughing and feeling wistful. The premise is two Black families coming together for a wedding on Martha's Vineyard. What makes me want to see this is possibility that it wont be your typical run-of-the mill slapstick geared towards Black audiences.

Angela Basset and Loretta Divine give the movie weight, while Mike Epps provides some toned-down comedy relief. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie, which comes up May 6, 2010.

Calypso St. Barth for Target

I've been having a bit of a cloudy period, and am sorely in need of a vacation. With some events in my personal life, there is nothing that I'd rather do than get away to some place sunny, balmy, and distant. Although New York City provides and abundance of daily retreats, my sights are set on someplace a little more foreign. Which is why I've been excited to preview the latest Target collaboration featuring Calypso. I generally love this line for its forgiving waistlines, and roomy, colorful tunics. So I thought I could expect the same for the less expensive Target collection. Sadly I'm a bit disappointed.

While there are some standout jewelry pieces, I can admit that I probably wont buy much, considering that similar dresses can be found for a song in Harlem or Jackson Heights. But I do look forward to the home collection for some cheaper versions of what I could purchase at the more authentic Calabar Imports on Washington Avenue in Brooklyn. I guess I'll just have to peruse the line in person once it hits the stores.

Lavish Beauty: Jane Carter Solutions

This past Friday, Bella Public Relations invited a few bloggers to their midtown offices in NYC for a royal celebration of sorts. It was a cheeky nod to the upcoming wedding nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton. They promised champagne, cupcakes, and beauty goodies—how could I resist? What I discovered upon my visit was an amazing array of natural skin and hair friendly products that I was just itching to try. I was so excited that I posted some of my early favorites on my Twitter right then and there.

Luckily, I was given some Jane Carter products to sample. Ms. Carter recently won the 2011 Essence Beauty Award for her Curly Hair cream, so I was curious about the validity of her wonder potions, which feature moisture-holding ingredients like shea butter and aloe vera. The packaging promised soft, tangle-free locks, so I set out to put it to the test.

My hair, like many women of color, tends to shrink up when dry. I love my hair when its wet—its wild, funky, and free. But after a day or so, it shrivels up, and just looks like a cluttered mess. I was banking on these products.

Step 1. I combed out my hair. As you can see, it's pretty dense!

Step 2. I washed my hair using my favorite—Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Castile soap. It tends to be a bit drying, but there’s nothing like the tingle you get after that final rinse.

Step 3. After my shampoo, I massaged some of the Curl Defining Cream in.

Step 4. Then I did a two-strand twist...

Step 5. ...Followed by a spritz of the Natural Hold Locking spray

Step 6. I actually kept the twists in for two days, and let them out…

Step 7. ...Finishing off with a spritz of the Revitalizing leave-in conditioner

The results were fab. What do you think?

Rediscovering Me: My Return

Nearly a year ago, the most exciting/frightening/empowering experience came to me in the form of my beautiful daughter. Watching her, and rediscovering me has been a mind-blowing experience. I feel stronger, wiser, and more focused. And believe it or not, I feel 1,000 times more productive. Having a child makes you use your time more wisely, and appreciate the quiet space between you and another person who relies solely on you for comfort, food, and shelter.

Now that my life has become--dare I say it-- a bit more stabilized, I feel like I am truly ready to make my way back into the blogosphere. I have to admit, I wasn't completely gone. I would lurk on some of my favorite sites here and there. And if you follow me on Twitter at all, you undoubtedly saw some commentary here and there.

Well now, in the name of consistency, I am here, fully and earnestly. I've missed my fashion friends, I've missed musing about clothes and cupcakes, and laughing at celebrity foibles. And now I am pleased to to do it all once more, maybe even better than what I did before.

Blogger Erica Domesek is one crafty fashionista who will teach you how to trick out your shoes, your bags, and even your grandma's old sweater. I happily stumbled upon this Brazilian group (whose first name is pronounced Sur) in my quest for the perfect summer soundtrack. The foursome- Seu Jorge, Pupillo on drums, Lúcio Maiaon on guitar, and António Pinto on bass-- get summer and samba just right. Vogue Africa: Not happening says Conde Nast

Fashion photographer Mario Epanya from Cameroon was unsuccessful in convincing Conde Nast to publish an African edition of Vogue. So enthusiastic was Epanya about the proposal that he submitted faux covers to whet the appetites of Vogue editors. They're a little "off-brand" but you get the point.

Said the photog on his Facebook page:

DEAR ALL. The Wait is over. Condé Nast said NO to an African license of VOGUE. So this is the last cover. Enjoy, but it’s a beginning of something,”

What a damn shame. But then again, maybe not. Maybe we don't need an Westernized version of "what's haute" since African textiles, artisty, and style have dominated the runways time and time again.

Sugar Pie Honey Bunch

Since my body became ultra-sensitive during and after my recent pregnancy, I can't wear anything fake. And that not only applies to jewels--everything I place in and outside of my body must be natural or else I face the wrath of unforgiving skin rashes. But my preference towards all-natural, fresh ingredients often comes at a hefty price tag. So what better (and cheaper!) way than to make my own body concoctions! If it's in my fridge, it can't be bad for my skin, right?

Brown Sugar Body Scrub
(from SELF Magazine)

1/2 cup ground almonds
1/2 cup ground oatmeal
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 cup almond oil
2 1 cup containers with lids

Combine the first 3 ingredients in a food processor until well blended. Place in a bowl. Add vanilla, then slowly stir in oil until mixture has a paste-like texture. Apply to wet skin at room tempurature, concentrating on dry, rough patches. Thoroughly rinse with warm water. Refrgerate leftovers for up to 5 days.

"I was 23 when I realized that I wasn't Venus. She's totally different. I'm super curvy. I have big boobs and this massive butt. She's tall and she's like a model and she fits everything. I was growing up, wanting to be her, wanting to look like her, and I was always fitting in her clothes, but then one day I couldn't. But it's fine. Now I'm obviously good, but it's a weird thing. . . . To this day, I don't love my arms. People want more fit arms, but my arms are too fit. But I'm not complaining. Sip of Summer

Oh, the joys of motherhood. These past couple of months had me seeped in BabyWorld with my life consisting of diapers and drool, and nary a thought of fashion, culture or adult conversation. My bundle of joy made her appearance on Mother's Day last month and all I could think about was having a drink and eating the most raw sushi I could find. but really, I wanted to drink more. My first sip was an apple martini mixed up nice and strong by one of my aunts. I later picked up a bottle of German Riesling--a craving I had my entire pregnancy-- and welcomed the first days of summer with a few sips.

Grazing across New York magazine's Summer Issue I came across a delicious-sounding group of summer sippers perfect foryour backyard/rooftop summer shindigs. The Piper's Punch recipe sounds especially inviting. It's a little involved, but the results are well worth it:

Piper’s Punch

a.k.a. the Kilted Bastard

For cinnamon syrup:
2 cups granulated sugar
15 sticks cinnamon

For honey syrup:
1 cup honey
1/2 peach
9 oz. fresh lemon juice
2 oz. cinnamon syrup
4 oz. honey syrup
24 oz. Famous Grouse blended Scotch
12 oz. rooibos tea
6 oz. fresh grapefruit juice
2 1/2 oz. rhum orange liqueur
2 oz. pineapple juice
Ice, frozen in two clean, quart-size takeout containers

For garnish:
Sprig of mint
Pineapple round
2 to 4 lemon rounds
2 to 4 grapefruit rounds

Cinnamon Syrup: Combine 2 cups of water, sugar, and cinnamon sticks in saucepan and simmer until sugar dissolves. Allow to cool for at least 1 hour. Strain. Will keep for 2 weeks.

Honey Syrup: Combine honey with 1 cup hot water. Stir until combined. Cool.

Instructions: Slice peach and muddle in plastic bowl with lemon juice, cinnamon syrup, and honey syrup. Add remaining ingredients and let sit for 20 minutes. Strain into a punch bowl over big ice. Garnish with mint and rounds of pineapple, lemon, and grapefruit. Pour in punch glasses. Serves 8.

Zac Posen for Target: To Lust or to Wait?

I've been enviously eyeing the most recent designer collections from Target. My recent faves have been some pieces from the Gaultier collection and the Liberty of London collection, which I absolutely adore. So when images recently popped up for the Zac Posen collection I jumped to take a look--only to be slightly disappointed by the price range. While other stores with designer colabos--such as H&M-- have shown slightly stiff prices on some collectible pieces, I was a little turned off by the prices for the Target Posen collection. The prices range from $17, and go as high as $200. For some reason, I just don't think that the average Target customer is going to shell out that type of dough. But then again, I am a skeptic for those would-be purchasers of Apple's new ipad-meaning, my consumer forecast could be completely off. In any case, here are a few of my favorite pieces from the collection.
