DIY like Vena Cava

The DIY Dress, on the model. All images Teen Vogue

Instead of sitting around moping on yet another dreary, rainy day, why not make something fashionable? I’m always peeping my head into the Do-It-Yourself section of certain magazines, and this project comes courtesy of Teen Vogue. Difficulty? beginner- Intermediate. Full instructions HERE:

Prep Items:
* Three yards of vintage fabric
* A tape measure
* scissors, needle, and thread
* a white t-shirt
* felt Stick-It letters

Step 1: Cut the fabric to make the skirt of the dress. For width, measure your waist and multiply that number by three. Next, cut the desired length.

Step 2: Using the needle and thread, make a running stitch across the top of the fabric, with each stitch about one-quarter inch in length. When finished, pull the stitch to shirr the skirt.

Step 3: Trim the bottom of the T-shirt so that it hits your natural waist. Sew the skirt’s waist to the T-shirt’s bottom. Stick the letters across the front of the shirt to spell out your message.

And the final product!

It took a couple seasons, but gladiators have grown on me. I didn’t think it could happen. While most still aren’t that flattering to me, there are a few styles that I have come across that I wouldn’t mind sliding my feet into. I have found the “Rosenberger” by Aldo Shoes, $75, AldoShoes.com, to be my favorite of the season. They are affordable and comfortable looking, but it was the various colorful textures and hardware that hooked me. Check out my other picks.

“Gazit” by Donald J Pliner, $242.65, Bloomingdales.com.

I’m thinking great for running errands on the weekends

“Rothschild” on sale now for $24.49, NineWest.com.

I can see these with a short, flowing empire west dress for a date.

“Faritta” also on sale for $24.44, AldoShoes.com.

Definitely pair with long, wide leg linen pants for those evening walks on the beach.

Bewitched, Bothered, and Bijules

GELFING ear tip modeled by Bijules creator Jules Kim

Bijules designer Jules Kim launched “The Rock Collection” a series of silver and gold-plated pieces based on the imperfect nature of the rock. Each piece is beautifully crafted, and has an organic realistically-street vibe. The Fools Gold Bangle reminds you of abbreviated gold nuggets found in a shallow stream. You Should See: Volta NY/ Armory Shows

My friend Peter from Art Comments shot me over the info for this multimedia film series showing at the Tribeca Grand this weekend. This 3-part film series is part of New Yorks annual Armory show. Featuring themes based on design masters Charles & Ray Eames and concepts incorporating mixed media and soundscapes, these features are sure to become a catalyst for creativity in environmental design. The details

A New Stance for Tomorrow- Screening Programme Parts 1 & 2
The screening programme will be split into two, conceptually focused around the films of Charles and Ray Eames from the 1950s and 1980s
A New Stance for Tomorrow Parts 1 and 2 in the Grand Screen screening room at the Tribeca Grand Hotel:
Wed 4th March 4pm | Thurs 5th March 7pm (preview) and 10pm | Fri 6th March 2pm | Sat 7th March 7pm | Sun 8th March 7pm

A New Stance for Tomorrow – Part 2 Wildflowers of Manitoba mixed-media performative installation
The second major piece, hosted in The Tribeca Grand’s Sanctum, comprises an arresting mixed media work that incorporates film, performance and a domed installation by Noam Gonick and Luis Jacob. Wildflowers of Manitoba is both a utopian vision of an idealistic world and a model or vision of how things to come could be.
Wildflowers of Manitoba in the Sanctum at the Tribeca Grand Hotel:
Daily performances: Wed 4th March – Sun 8th March | 4pm – 10pm

A New Stance for Tomorrow – Part 3 Soundscape and installation at VOLTA NY 7W
A New Stance for Tomorrow continues in the elevators at 7W – the site of VOLTA NY with a series of artists’ soundscapes and audio projects, including with Byron Broadbent’s Cine-Pod – a solar-powered cinema made from ‘smart glass’ – a switchable material that transforms from translucent to opaque with the start and end of a screening.

Ironic marriage rituals

While women Stateside starve themselves to fit into the perfect wedding dress, our African sisters are being force-fed in a marital tradition–“fattening”–as a way of being groomed for their future husbands. Continue

“In Mauritania, a woman’s size indicates the amount of space she occupies in her husband’s heart,” said Mint Ely, head of the Association of Women Heads of Households. ”We have gone backwards. We had a Ministry of Women’s Affairs. We had achieved a parliamentary quota of 20% of seats. We had female diplomats and governors. The military have set us back by decades, sending us back to our traditional roles. We no longer even have a ministry to talk to.”

and

Leblouh is intimately linked to early marriage and often involves a girl of five, seven or nine being obliged to eat excessively to achieve female roundness and corpulence, so that she can be married off as young as possible. Girls from rural families are taken for leblouh at special “fattening farms” where older women, or the children’s aunts or grandmothers, will administer pounded millet, camel’s milk and water in quantities that make them ill. A typical daily diet for a six-year-old will include two kilos of pounded millet, mixed with two cups of butter, as well as 20 litres of camel’s milk. “The fattening is done during the school holidays or in the rainy season when milk is plentiful,” said M’baye. “The girl is sent away from home without understanding why. She suffers but is told that being fat will bring her happiness. Matrons use sticks which they roll on the girl’s thighs, to break down tissue and hasten the process…If she vomits she must drink it.

Short Girls Have Tall Dreams Too

Though I’m a little worried that the winner may not see much fame and success beyond America’s Next Top Model and the Cover Girl contract she’ll win, Kudos to Tyra Banks for giving the short girls a shot at stardom. More

Being one of the short girls once myself, having never made it beyond The Miss Ohio Teen U.S.A. Pageant, I’ll be tuning into every episode of the show next season. I sincerely hope that I’m wrong. I’d really love to see a short girl reach top model status beyond the show. Kate Moss did it, so here’s hoping.

Betty Jackson: Comfort Zone

See this by SUNDAY! Calder Jewelry

Necklace by Master welder/jeweler Alexander Calder

I saw this before I went to Africa and was STUNNED. Each and every piece was amazingly detailed. Could you imagine being the wife–or friend– of a jewelry master?

THE MET: ‘CALDER JEWELRY,’ through March 1. Concurrent with the Whitney Museum’s “Alexander Calder: The Paris Years,” this exhibition is the first museum show to focus on that American sculptor’s fanciful jewelry. The works in “Calder Jewelry” are made of the same materials as his wire sculptures — mostly brass and steel, with bits of ceramic, wood and glass — and are just as self-consciously clever. Among the highlights are oversize necklaces with flared and barbed shoulders, pendulous earrings worn by Peggy Guggenheim and the simple spiral of gold wire Calder gave his wife as an engagement ring.

And don’t complain about the Met’s price. The $20 donation is suggested. You can literally give 5 cents and they will let you in…

Taraji P. Henson’s Oscars After-Party Look

Fashion critics are saying Taraji P. Henson’s Oscars after-party look was an Oscar no-no. Though I would not have chosen this dress, I don’t think it’s a total loss. I love the color and fabric, but not the train. Taraji’s other look

Taraji at the Oscars in Roberto Cavalli.

I wouldn’t have chosen this dress either. Though she didn’t choose to-die-for dresses for the Oscars or the after-party, the necklace is definitely a real winner here, and so is Taraji, style aside.
