New York Fashion Week SS16: The Stealth Watch

So I sat quietly this week, watching, noting, indulging. If there was one word I could use to describe this week, it would be disruption. From Kanye throwing everyone off by staging a last minute show, to Givenchy presenting their iconic collection in New York, to Marc Jacobs and his vaudeville nod at the Zeigfield – #NYFW definitely kept everyone on their toes. Here are some of my faves from the collections.  (Click to enlarge)

Billboard Music Awards Fashion: Look Ma, No Pants!

I have to admit that while watching the awards, I shamelessly flipped between the Real Housewives of OC to see the unveiling of Alexis Couture (howl!) and Celebrity Apprentice. Honestly, I really didn’t care to listen to any live performances; I was really interested in what everyone was (or in this case) wasn’t wearing. The theme of the evening? The red carpet produced some solid sartorial gems, and the stage performance threw the pants out of the window.

For best dressed, it was a tossup between Michelle Williams (left) perfectly accessorized look and Rihanna’s flawless white pantsuit.

Here’s the rundown:

Michelle William’s excellent accessory choices

Kelly Rowland was simply sexy in a bold-colored bandage dress and strappy heels. Flawless skin is a woman’s best accessory.

Now THIS. I would rock this any day. PER-FEC-TION.

What to wear vs. What NOT to wear.

I expected better from Nicki, honestly

Former MTV VJ Julie Brown made an appearance

I need Mary’s earrings in my life!

The pants-less crew ft. Britney and Rihanna

Keri Hilson was a Sunny Delight in yellow chiffon mini with turquoise belt accent

And of course, nobody does no pants quite like Beyonce.

It’s Gotta Be The Shoes

When a woman reminisces about her first pair of shoes, she usually waxes poetic about her first pair of heels. Yet, there’s something about the memory of your first pair of kicks that sparks up a wave of nostalgia. Whether you broke them for special occasions like the first day or school or wore them out while hanging around the block, they bring that perfect blend of style and swagger that’ll wrap your look up to a tee. So, take a minute today to give props to the first and fabulous pair of sneaks in your life.

Feminista – The New Chick Lit?

When I first heard of Erica Kennedy’s latest novel, Feminista, from The Black Snob, late last month, my heart skipped a beat at the sight of the title. After all, I’ve wondered for a while if society would ever quit pigeonholing a feminist with a hankering for all things fashion like me into a boring square peg. Add an unapologetically confident successful heroine of what Publisher’s Weekly lovingly referred to as ‘bitch lit’ named Sydney Zamora and I was game.

Yet, a funny thing happened while reading this book. The so-called bravado that it promised to provide was as paper-thin as the Sydney’s self-possession. For while I truly expected Feminista to be that chick lit game-changer, it predictably fell back on familiar stereotypes and ultimately reduced this ‘strong bitch’ to a whiny one. Thus, while I’m intrigued by the idea of chick lit’s ornery stepsister, Feminista proves that it has a long way to go before it truly comes into fruition.

Fashion Week Flix: Bijules

Jules Kim has had a fantastic year. I’ve watched her amazing jewelry line go from an underground cult following to being featured in magazines, and music videos like Beyoncé’s Sweet Dreams. This season, her line has evolved into intricately designed headpieces and finger-wear featuring the likes of delicate animal bones modeled in gold.

Fashion Week Flix: Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti

The Philosophy show was held at Eyebeem Gallery in the Chelsea art district. The brick background was an interesting contrast to the soft, airy day dresses that flowed down the runway. A big theme of the evening were the patterned DVF-like lips that appeared on nearly every piece. What would Diane say?

Fashion Week Flix: Thuy

The big detail that I keep seeing pop up over and over on the runways is piping or wide edging along hemlines. I saw it at Thom Browne, and and I saw it at the Thuy show on Tuesday. This was a collection of after 7-wear; sparkly overcoats and sweet cocktail dresses in punchy colors outlined Thuy’s looks. Here are some flix:

Fashion Week Flix: Vassilios Kostetsos

The collection of Vassilios Kostetsos was like watching jewels emerge from the Mediterranean sea. Flowing gowns bedecked in crystals and sequins along with metallic detailed mini dresses were more than rare jewels.

Fashion Week Flix: Custo Barcelona

This show was MASSIVE. With all the celebs in the room, and the excitement in the air(partly due to the buzz around the VMAs) the Tent was on fire! Dominique and I decided to sit this one out and simply enjoy the show. No filming, no snapping pix, no interviewing–just watching. I will say that the Custo show may have had the MOST black models featured so far. I mean, for the first 15 mins of the show, it was all Black models! KUDOS! And of course the vibrant clothes were amazing–just what I expected from the line–and a little more. Flix below:

Fashion Week Flix: Tuleh

Instead of sitting for the Tuleh show on Sunday I actually grabbed a spot alongside the photographers to get a better vantage point. This clothes were the vision of a girl’s dream… from pretty little girl, to city woman, to modern wedding princess. I adored just about every frilly piece! Flix below:
