Lavish Home: 5 Lusts

I was browsing my favorite section of my favorite store, Anthrologie, and of course came across some adorable stylish housewares, like the hand drawn china set below. Here are a few of my home decor wishes to spruce up the home this winter.

Hand-drawn china from Anthropologie

A wonderfully sexy soulful art print
Vintage fountain pens (like these Limited edition Montblacs) for letters.
Fresh flowers, like my favorite – peonies
A large Indian wall tapestry

The Stylist: Kelly Rowland’s Style Playbook

I just loved the the lipstick print Stella McCartney sweater that Kelly rocked at La La Anthony’s book signing for The Love Playbook. But at nearly $800, I wasn’t so sure that I would put down that type of cash for such a trendy item. A Google search turned up nothing that I liked (besides this kind-of-ok interpretation) so I did the next best thing, and made my own. You can get my long-sleeved lipstick shirt here. As for Kelly’s outfit, it looked so comfortable that I plan on stealing it for real.

Lavish Beauty: The Messy Bob

I have to say, I can’t get with Beyonce’s messy/ curly bob she’s been rocking as of late. The look makes sense for the Drunk in Love video, while she plays on the beach, but I think it’s incredibly difficult to pass off on a day to day basis. There are so many things going on here: The bleached tips, the ombre coloring,  the frizzy curls, the half wet/half dry — all a recipe for disaster for a Black woman’s fragile hair follicles, especially any woman who isn’t able to have top stylists at her fingertips. And I hate to say it, but if not done precisely right, the results have the appeal of a wet dog. Not sexy.

Below are some modified messy bobs that I think are more feasible, maintainable, and best of all, put-together.

There is No Such Thing as the Benevolent Slave Owner

Sometimes it’s hard to fathom that someone who is a part of your lineage was just no good. Like the family of William Prince Ford, the slave owner of Solomon Northrup, depicted in print and in the movie 12 Years a Slave. In this New York Post article, a descendent says

“By all accounts, my great-great-grandfather treated his slaves well and did his best for them.”

Even Northrup wrote of his slavemaster in kind terms, noting that

“There never was a more kind, noble, candid, Christian man than William Ford.”

But it is ironic that the terms slave, and treated well, can be put in the same sentence with such ease, in describing one of the greatest evils to occur on American soil. Because a slave who is truly treated well, is not a slave at all, but a free man.
