Lavish Eats: Dal Shorba (curried lentil soup)

No matter where you go, there seems to be an arctic blast of cold air. With places like Texas (Texas!) getting snow, its no wonder people are grabbing their blankets and opting for a cozy day in. And what better way to warm your tummy and your soul, than with a great bowl of soup. This tasty dish was brought to my attention by my friend Gina, who went into a soup-making frenzy this weekend. Which is smart because soups are simple to make and store easily in the freezer for later use. Here’s the recipe:

Dal Shorba (curried lentil soup)
Note: red, brown or green lentils can be used.
Makes 6 1 1/3 cup servings

Ingredients:
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
2 teaspoons curry powder
1 teaspoon crushed coriander seeds
1 teaspoon crushed cumin seeds
1/2 tsp. ground turmeric
1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
1 TBS. olive oil
5 cups vegetable stock
4 cups water
2 cups lentils, sorted and rinsed (not precooked)
salt and pepper, to taste
6 TBS. fat-free plain yogurt (for garnish)

1. Saute onion, garlic, herbs, and red pepper in oil in large saucepan until onion is tender, about 5 min., stirring frequently. Add stock, water, and lentils; heat to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, until lentils are tender, about 30 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

2. Blend soup mixture in batches.

3. Serve hot; garnish  with a TBS of yogurt and splash of lemon juice.

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (Knees and Toes)

The events of the last few weeks have been nothing short of horrible for me personally. Suddenly the latest fashion must-have wasn’t so much of a must, and everyday Facebook chatter seemed non-important in the grander scheme of things. This weekend, despite it all, I decided to take action and get out of this funk in an inexpensive, yet self gratifying way. I would give myself a day of beauty in the comfort of my home with a few select products from one of my all-time favorite beauty stores, Lush.

Now I know how pricey some of the products can get, so I went in with my guiders on and my heart set on purchasing one valuable, long-lasting item. I was making my way to the Celestial face moisturizer, when lo and behold the best thing happened- a sign promising nine (9!) coveted products for the the insane price of $25!

Yes, you read that right. Nine quality, useful, and delectable beauty items to give you a perfect day of pampering. Here’s what you get: A Facial cleanser (your choice!) a jar of Celestial face cream, Lemony Flutter cuticle moisturizer, a shampoo bar (you choose!), a generous portion of a face mask (again, your selection!), Moisturizing body bar, Body Scrub, Hand Guru hand cream, a foot salve, and a secret item, which you’ll have to see for yourself. Get it at a participating Lush store today, or online, if you know what you want. Your body, mind, soul, and wallet will thank you a million times over.

Join WEEN for Haiti

Lavish magazine, a strong supporter of the relief efforts for Haiti, would love it if you could join forces with WEEN (Women in Entertainment Empowerment) in support of our Haitian brothers and sisters Tuesday, January 19th at the Katra Lounge, 217 Bowery St. New York, NY from 5-11pm. The only fee is 2 gallons, liters or a pack of bottled water and any amount of money you can donate.

2-for-1 drink specials will be offered from 5-7 and 10-11, and Katra will donate 10% of the bar proceeds to WEEN for Haiti, who will then donate all funds and water to Wyclef Jean’s YELE and Doctors without Borders.

Some of WEEN’s partners in this effort include Honeymag.com, The Source, She-blogs, BeanpYe, Hip Hop 4 Life and many others, so come out. There’s no better way to remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on this day than to come together in support of our people.

Let Haiti Live!

Yesterday’s earthquake touched me to my very core. As a Haitian American, this devastation to my beloved country cannot be ignored. The sun has risen and we will only begin to know how catastrophic this earthquake was. Please do what you can to help bring food, water and medicine to this devastated country.

Here are some ways to donate:
Yélé Haiti (yele.org)
Red Cross (redcross.org)
Unicef (unicef.org)
