Recipe: Banana Fritters

Harriet’s Alter Ego was hands-down one of my favorite Brooklyn shops. I could walk through its colorful doors on any given day and browse the eclectic collection of handmade artisan pieces, or just have a one-on-one conversation on a lazy afternoon. Now that the store has closed, I can visit their site for daily inspiration. Thanks to a meetup at the IFB conference during New York fashion week, HAE proprietor Ngozi Odita put me on!

I caught wind of a recipe today that I just had to share (and make!) It’s a little Nigerian treat called Banana Fritters. Try it for yourself. Your mouth will thank you!

Banana Fritters
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
6 Tablespoons sugar
3 eggs
1 cup milk
4 or 5 ripe bananas
vegetable oil for deep-frying
Confectioners’ sugar for dusting

Part 1
In large bowl, stir the flour and sugar together. With an electric mixer, beat in eggs one at a time. Slowly add the milk and mix until the batter is smooth and stretches like a ribbon.
Part 2
Coarsely chop the bananas and place them in a bowl. with fork, mash the bananas into a smooth puree. Stir the puree into the batter and let the mixture rest for at least 30 minutes before frying.
Part 3
Pour the oil into a deep saucepan to a depth of 2 to 3 inches and heat to 365 degrees (really important) Drop 2 tablespoons banana batter into the hot oil, deep-frying 2 or 3 fritter at a time leaving enough space so they can spread. Fry until golden brown, turning once with slotted spoon. Drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar ( my favorite part!) and serve warm.

StarStruck: Out with the lovers!

So the alpha known as Amber Rose got Kanye out and about. I love the colorful graphic-print dress and hot pink booties she’s sporting.

Janet was also out in Italy with her arms around a stallion. She played it cool in a blue one-piece jumper and silver python heels.

Lil Kim and Lisa Raye get their jet-ski on in Miami looking refreshed and virtually makeup free. A plus for these two because they are always fully made-up.

Ciara reminds us all of why they’re called “skinny” jeans. The singer was looking extremely gaunt while shopping in Cali. I blame it on Hollywood.

Bam Slam Fashion: Obama in Print

Obama-dressed women celebrate the arrival of the Obamas to Ghana in July

When Barack Obama was elected the first President of color of the United States, the world wide excitement not only motivated people but inspired a new movement. I coudn’t go anywhere in New York (or Africa for that matter) without seeing an Obama tshirt, handbag, sweater, or pin. I even saw Obama sneakers. So what to do when this look makes it to the red carpet? Is it hip? Is it tacky? Or is the dress just poorly made? Judge for yourself when you take a look at actress Victoria Rowell’s fashionable homage to Barack’s push for healthcare reform.

Rowell at the Emmy’s on Sunday

“Yesterday, the opportunity presented itself “Lights, camera, and no healthcare action?’ Setting the ruffles and caviar dreams aside is but a meager gesture to echo the herculean efforts of a healthcare reform package long overdue and one which President Obama is introducing for all Americans,” Rowell told ESSENCE.com

CelebStyle: Frosted Hair

Rihanna was out doing what she does in Soho on Tuesday. She was sporting a highly highlighted hairstyle that may be a bit overdone. Nonetheless, it’s Rihanna so she can fashionably get away with just about anything. The mashup of the grey sweater dress and Stella McCartney laser cut patterned leggings gives her a spacey gothic look.

I actually prefer Keri Hilson’s gently frosted tips. Shown here in July, the blond highlights frame her face and enhance–not distract–from her natural beauty.

What do you think? My hands are up for this one.

Morning Fabulosity: Michelle Williams

Due to some problems with Blogger, I was unable to post AT ALL for the past few days. So forgive me for the lack of (and lateness) of posts!

Michelle Williams brings out the glam in the latest issue of Random magazine in a series of stylish and flattering shots. We’ve seen Michelle looking fierce before, but these may be her best shots yet!
