Revisiting: Max Roach

Listen to Samples of this album

With the passing of jazz great Max Roach 2 weeks ago, I was reminded of the pure genius, sass, and relevance of hs work. Roach, a composer and drummer raised in Brooklyn, played with the greats including Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, and Duke Ellington (Money Jungle!) and that only scratches the surface. We Insist! Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite , was an oder to the 100th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, an album recorded amongst the racial and political backdrop of 1960s America, and it was this album that garnered Roach notoriety in the music industry. Enjoy a great.

Earthy Conscience

The Velib, the new, increasingly popular mode of transportation in Paris. Rent one for 5 euros a week of unlimited use. My travel salvation! Now if only NY got on the bandwagon…

Being in Europe really opens my eyes to how wasteful I can be in America. I am constantly reminded of this whenever I see the significantly smaller European fridge, the consistent, methodical use of the recycling system, and the noticeably smaller cars and use of mopeds. By far, Europe is leaps ahead in the conserving category. At the supermarket, everyone brings their own durable bag, and I’ve begun the practice as well. I even carry a bag in my purse, just in case I may go grocery shopping. It also helps that some markets charge you 3 cents per bag (so you can forget double-bagging everything!)

So why is it so hard to use the same practices in the U.S.? For New Yorkers, public transit is an essential, but why not the use of a moped over a car? They take up much less parking space, use less gas, and are a much better alternative to cars–not to mention the chic-ness of the smaller motorcycle. That being said, my next major purchase will be, not my convertible dream, but a cute little Vespa. And I’ve permanently switched from store plastic bags to my own cute little canvas bags for shopping. It’s really not so hard, so why not try it?

The Art of Scat

Bobby Mcferrin riffs with guitarist Richard Bona

Do you remember Bobby Mcferrin? (of Don’t Worry, Be Happy fame) While many have dismissed him as a one-hit wonder, McFerrin is hailed as a musical genius around the world. And rightly so. His musical prowress as composer and scatting impresario has gained a cult following. I was recently reminded of his ingenuity as I watched a few video clips of his performances. Which brought me to my larger love of Jazz, and it’s infiltration into another major part of my life, Hip Hop.

I won’t get into the history of jazz, scat, and it’s modern incarnations, nor do I profess myself to be a scholar; but I will provide you with some new and not-so new scat improvisations that are sure to refresh your mind and music collection. Enjoy.

Taste The Rainbow: Color Accessories

Clockwise from top left: “Debra” bootie from Target; Chanel clutch; Chanel pump; Leather gloves by Malo on Vivre.com; Lanvin bootie; Fendi suede leather clutches.

I’m in love with color, as you’ve seen recently. And this fall candy-coated sweetness has spilled over to accessories. As the weather cools and color palates (pun intended) darken, be different and pick saturated booties and patent neon clutches for a bold and funky touch to your wardrobe. Get inspired.

Anything Goes: Rock en Seine 2007

Rock en Seine is Paris’ yearly music extravaganza featuring the biggest and hottest underground musicians, as well lesser known artists. This year, the weekend-long event took place in St. Cloud , a small vilage on the outskirts of Paris. The festival which ended yesterday, was a wonderful way to end the last weekend in August, and as the sun set on a beautiful day in Paris, Bjork took the stage in all her splendor engaging the audience in hits such as the dark, romantic Emergency and ethereal Pagan Poetry.

Though sound was the obvious center of this affair, fashion always rides the coattails of the music. Here, a few star flicks…
